photoWelcome

Alzheimer's Disease currently afflicts over 5 million people. It strikes one in eight persons age 65 and oldre, and half of those 85 and older. The overwhleming task of managing AD is the responsibility of healthcare professionals and family and friends alike.

During the 13 years that my wife, Maxine, struggled with Alzheimer's, I became a caregiver and as a result, gleened much insight into how best to support a patient suffering from any type of dementia. The tools that I used, including such things as memory books and humor, not only comforted Maxine, but helped me avoid overwhelming feelings of helplessness.

If you or someone you love has had to step into the role of caregiver, the information posted in these pages will assist in making that role easier. Although efforts to unlock the secret of Alzheimer's are increasing, science still has an arduous journey to tread. Until a cure is found, however, we must all assume the responsibility of helping AD and dementia patients maintain their self-respect and live as comfortably as possible. As a caregiver for more than a decade, I can attest that there are ways to acccomplish such goals.

May these pages help you and your loved ones as you contend with a disease that leaves all of us asking WHY?

Sincerely,

Jim Greenwood
